Is there any real connection between the names of J.Rowling's Slitherin House and Suetterlin, the "German handwriting"? (Scarcely, I presume.)

I don't think there's a connection, though it'd be cool. It looks to me like everything is much simpler, slithering - Slitherin...

Yes. Actually, I think that a book can became so popular only if an author uses obvious connections.
May be she had in mind (or used it subconsciously) the word "suetterlin", while naming the house/wizard, but I really doubt it.
Though, as I said, it'd be cool. I like the gothic handwritings (and pity those who had to deal with them on the regular basis:))

Мабыць, Вы можаце больш зразумела (чым тут: http://www.hi-edu.ru/x-books/xbook107/01/index.html?part-023.htm - пункт 3-і) патлумачыць statements пра асіміляцыйнае памякчэнне ў рускай мове. Ці ёсць яно наогул? Ці супадае яно з аналагічным у беларускай мове?

Яно ёсьць :) Калі ў двух словах -- яно там слабей выражана, закранае не зусім / не заўсёды тыя зычныя, што ў беларускай мове, і ў асобных сітуацыях мае крыху іншы характар (найперш гэта шапялявасьць пры памякчэньні сьвісьцячых).
